School Board approves Safe School and Community Resolution 4 – 1

Thank you, Karen Burkhardt, for reporting this great news and thank you to everyone who attended and offered their support!

With all public seats taken, Superintendent Lakin opened discussion of the safe haven school district agenda item by strongly recommending the board approve the resolution. During board discussion, despite Jack Lakin’s review of compelling reasons to approve the resolution, board members Hansen and Richardson expressed that there was no need to take this action. Then at the request of several audience members who rose to speak, Board President Nunes opened public comment. Many attendees spoke eloquently and convincingly in support of the resolution.

Resolution 01-1617, approved on 4/5/2017, states in part, be it further resolved “That the Board reaffirms Ferndale Unified School District’s unequivocal commitment to ensuring a safe educational environment for all students, serving as a safe haven school district for students and families threatened by immigration enforcement or discrimination, to the fullest extent provided by the law.”
