Jack Lakin, the superintendent of the Ferndale School District, has announced his resignation as of June 30, 2017. It is now the responsibility of the board of trustees to begin the selection process for a new superintendent.
There were times in the past when this process was accomplished within the guidelines presented in the attached document — put simply, a panel of people reviewed resumes vetted by the County Board of Education, selected three finalists to interview, conducted the interviews, and recommended the hiring to the board.
In the year that I was one of the community members of the panel (community members, parents, teachers, students), we did not find a suitable candidate on the first round of interviews and had to go through the process a second time. This required all of us to spend quite a few days in the high school library! (The discussions and the debates over the candidates eventually resulted in the hiring of Alan Brainard.)
It is the responsibility of the community to ensure that we have excellent schools.
The attached document is a good start to thinking about how the process must proceed in order to fulfill that responsibility.
